Although candidates still commonly call it **WAEC GCE**, the official name is **West African Senior School Certificate Examination for Private Candidates**.

WAEC conducts the private-candidate examination in two series, giving candidates more than one opportunity during the year to obtain or improve their O’Level results.

As of September 2026, **WAEC has not yet announced the official registration dates, closing dates or registration fee for the 2027 First and Second Series**.

However, recent WAEC registration and examination patterns give us a useful idea of what candidates should expect.

The 2025 First Series registration opened in December 2024 at ₦27,000, while the examination ran from late January to mid-February 2025. The 2026 First Series followed almost the same pattern, with registration extending into January and the examination taking place from late January to mid-February.

For the 2026 Second Series, registration began on May 4, 2026, the fee rose to ₦37,000, and the examination was scheduled for September and October.

Based on these recent patterns, **WAEC GCE 2027 First Series registration is expected to begin around December 2026**, while the Second Series is expected to open around **May or June 2027**.

Candidates should also budget around **₦37,000 or slightly more**, although the official 2027 fee has not yet been announced.

This page will be updated once WAEC releases the confirmed dates and fees.

## WAEC GCE Registration 2027 at a Glance

Here is what we currently know and what candidates can reasonably expect.

| First Series registration date | Not yet announced |
| Expected First Series registration | December 2026 to January 2027 |
| Expected First Series examination | Late January to mid-February 2027 |
| Second Series registration date | Not yet announced |
| Expected Second Series registration | May to June 2027 |
| Expected Second Series deadline | July to August 2027 |
| Expected Second Series examination | September to October 2027 |
| Official 2027 registration fee | Not yet announced |
| Expected registration fee | Around ₦37,000 plus applicable charges |
| Registration method | Online |
| Biometric registration | Expected to be required |
| Minimum subjects | 8 |
| Maximum subjects | 9 |
| Core subjects for 2027 | English Language and General Mathematics |
| Official registration portal | registration.waecdirect.org |

The expected periods above are estimates based on recent WAEC private-candidate examination cycles. They should not be mistaken for officially announced 2027 dates.

## Is WAEC GCE Registration for 2027 Open?

Not yet.

As of September 2026, WAEC has not officially opened registration for the **2027 WASSCE for Private Candidates First Series**.

The current private-candidate registration system is still dealing with the 2026 examination cycle.

Candidates preparing for the 2027 First Series should start watching for an announcement around the final months of 2026.

Based on the recent pattern, registration is expected to become available around:

**December 2026**

and continue into:

**January 2027**

The safest place to check when registration begins is the official WAEC Private Candidate registration portal.

[Check the Official WAEC Private Candidate Registration Portal](https://registration.waecdirect.org/)

WAEC’s main online service page also links directly to the Private Candidate registration system.

## When Will WAEC GCE Registration 2027 Start?

WAEC has **not yet announced the official starting date** for the 2027 First Series.

However, the First Series has recently opened around December and continued into January.

For example, registration for the **2025 First Series** commenced in December 2024, with WAEC selling registration PINs for ₦27,000.

The 2026 First Series also opened around late December 2025 and continued through January 2026.

Based on that pattern, our current expectation is:

**Expected First Series registration start**

December 2026

**Expected First Series closing period**

Late January 2027

**Expected First Series examination**

Late January to mid-February 2027

These are planning estimates.

Once WAEC announces the official timetable, the confirmed dates should take priority.

## Expected WAEC GCE First Series 2027 Dates

The First Series is the earlier private-candidate examination.

The recent calendar has been quite consistent.

In 2025, the main examination ran from **January 29 to February 15**.

For 2026, the main Nigerian First Series papers ran from **January 28 to February 14**.

That gives us a strong basis for expecting a similar period in 2027.

| First Series Activity | Expected Period |
| --------------------- | --------------- |
| Registration starts | December 2026 |
| Registration continues | January 2027 |
| Regular registration closes | Around late January 2027 |
| Examination begins | Around late January 2027 |
| Examination ends | Around mid-February 2027 |

WAEC can still change the calendar.

Candidates should therefore use this table for planning rather than treating it as the final timetable.

## When Will WAEC GCE Second Series 2027 Registration Start?

The Second Series registration date has also not yet been officially announced.

Recent registration exercises suggest that candidates should expect registration to begin around **May or June 2027**.

For the 2026 Second Series, registration commenced on **May 4, 2026**. The original deadline was July 31 before WAEC later extended the registration period.

Based on that pattern, our current estimate is:

**Expected registration opening**

May to June 2027

**Expected regular closing period**

July to August 2027

**Expected examination period**

September to October 2027

WAEC may open the registration earlier or later.

The exact dates will only become official after an announcement from the Council.

## Expected WAEC GCE Second Series 2027 Dates

| Second Series Activity | Expected Period |
| ---------------------- | --------------- |
| Registration starts | May to June 2027 |
| Regular registration period | May to July/August 2027 |
| Expected deadline | July to August 2027 |
| Examination | Around September to October 2027 |

Do not deliberately wait for a registration extension.

WAEC extended the 2026 Second Series deadline, but candidates should never assume that an extension will happen every year.

Register during the normal period once WAEC opens the 2027 exercise.

## How Much Is WAEC GCE Registration 2027?

The official **WAEC GCE registration fee for 2027 has not yet been announced**.

However, previous fees give candidates a reasonable amount to use when budgeting.

| Examination | Registration Fee |
| ----------- | ---------------- |
| 2025 First Series | ₦27,000 |
| 2026 First Series | ₦27,000 |
| 2026 Second Series | ₦37,000 |
| 2027 First Series | Not yet announced |
| 2027 Second Series | Not yet announced |
| Expected 2027 planning amount | Around ₦37,000 or slightly more |

The notable change occurred with the 2026 Second Series.

WAEC’s 2026 information put the registration cost at **₦37,000**, with an additional sales-agent/service charge reported separately.

Therefore, candidates preparing for 2027 should probably budget **at least around ₦37,000**, rather than relying on the older ₦27,000 fee.

A slightly higher budget would also be sensible in case WAEC reviews the fee again.

> **Expected 2027 registration fee:** Around ₦37,000 plus applicable service or sales-agent charges. WAEC has not yet confirmed the actual 2027 amount.

## Will WAEC GCE 2027 Registration Cost ₦27,000?

It is possible, but ₦27,000 is no longer the best figure to use when planning.

The 2025 First Series registration PIN cost ₦27,000.

The 2026 First Series was also reported at ₦27,000.

However, WAEC later increased the 2026 Second Series fee to **₦37,000**.

Because ₦37,000 is the latest known private-candidate registration fee, we think it is safer for a 2027 candidate to budget around that amount or slightly above it.

We will replace the estimate with the official figure once WAEC announces it.

## What Is WAEC GCE?

WAEC GCE is the popular name used for the **WASSCE for Private Candidates**.

The examination is organised by the West African Examinations Council for candidates who register individually rather than through a secondary school.

WAEC explains that registration for private candidates is done on an individual basis, unlike the School Candidate examination where the school handles the candidate’s entry.

This makes the examination useful for candidates who have already left secondary school but still need an O’Level result.

## Is WAEC GCE the Same as WASSCE?

WAEC is the examination body.

WASSCE is the examination.

The examination commonly called **WAEC GCE** in Nigeria is officially the:

**West African Senior School Certificate Examination for Private Candidates**

or:

**WASSCE for Private Candidates**

So when somebody says:

**“I want to register for WAEC GCE 2027.”**

they are normally referring to the WASSCE for Private Candidates.

## Difference Between First Series and Second Series

Both examinations are for private candidates, but they take place at different periods of the year.

### First Series

The First Series is held earlier in the year.

WAEC’s general examination information describes the first private-candidate examination as taking place around February.

Recent First Series examinations have begun in late January and ended around mid-February.

### Second Series

The Second Series is conducted later in the year.

Traditionally, candidates knew this examination as the **November/December WAEC GCE**.

However, the examination calendar has been changing.

For example, WAEC scheduled the 2026 Second Series around September and October rather than keeping it strictly within November and December.

This is why candidates should rely on the current timetable instead of assuming that “WAEC GCE” will always be written in November and December.

## Who Can Register for WAEC GCE 2027?

WAEC’s private-candidate examination is primarily intended for people who are not entering WASSCE through a secondary school.

Candidates may include:

- People who previously wrote WAEC but want to improve some grades
- School leavers who need another O’Level result
- Candidates who did not obtain the subjects needed for admission
- Candidates who missed an earlier examination
- Adults seeking an O’Level qualification
- Candidates who need another sitting for admission
- Candidates trying to complete required subjects

WAEC’s published eligibility information includes candidates who have previously attempted WASSCE and other recognised categories.

## Can You Use WAEC GCE for University Admission?

Yes.

A WASSCE for Private Candidates result can be used for admission where the candidate meets the institution’s requirements.

The fact that the examination was written as a private candidate does not automatically make the result unsuitable for university admission.

The important questions are:

- Do you have the required subjects?
- Do you have the required grades?
- Does the university accept your number of sittings?
- Does your course impose additional O’Level requirements?

WAEC also confirms that School Candidate and Private Candidate WASSCE results can be combined for admission purposes.

## Can You Combine WAEC GCE With School WAEC?

Yes.

WAEC states that WASSCE School Candidate and Private Candidate results can be combined for admission purposes.

For example, suppose your school WAEC result contains:

**English Language — B3**

**Mathematics — C5**

**Biology — B2**

but you have an unacceptable Chemistry grade.

You may decide to write the Private Candidate examination and obtain a better Chemistry result.

Whether the university will accept the two sittings together still depends on the requirements of the institution and your chosen course.

## How Many Subjects Can You Register for in WAEC GCE 2027?

WAEC’s current entry regulations require candidates to enter a **minimum of eight subjects and maximum of nine subjects**.

For candidates sitting WASSCE in 2026 and 2027, the two core subjects currently available are:

- English Language
- General Mathematics

WAEC states that candidates should then choose another six or seven subjects to make a minimum of eight and maximum of nine subjects.

## Are English and Mathematics Compulsory for WAEC GCE 2027?

Under WAEC’s current entry regulations for 2026 and 2027, **English Language and General Mathematics are the two core subjects**.

Two additional core subjects — Citizenship and Heritage Studies and Digital Technologies — are part of WAEC’s revised curriculum arrangements, but WAEC says they will not be examined as core subjects until 2028.

Therefore, for 2027 candidates, the two current core subjects remain:

**English Language**

and

**General Mathematics**

## WAEC GCE Subjects for 2027

After English Language and General Mathematics, candidates choose additional subjects according to their intended course or purpose.

Available areas include subjects in Science, Humanities, Business and Trade categories.

Examples include:

### Science

- Biology
- Chemistry
- Physics
- Agriculture
- Further Mathematics
- Geography
- Health Education
- Physical Education
- Foods and Nutrition
- Technical Drawing

### Humanities

- Government
- Nigerian History
- Christian Religious Studies
- Islamic Studies
- Literature-in-English
- Hausa
- Igbo

- Visual Art
- Music

- Catering Craft

### Business

- Accounting
- Commerce
- Marketing
- Economics

### Trade Subjects

- Fashion Design and Garment Making
- Livestock Farming
- Beauty and Cosmetology
- Computer Hardware and GSM Repairs
- Solar Photovoltaic Installation and Maintenance
- Horticulture and Crop Production

WAEC’s current entry regulations list these subject categories.

Do not choose subjects simply because you believe they will be easier.

Your subject combination should match what you intend to use the result for.

## WAEC GCE Registration Requirements 2027

WAEC has not yet published the final 2027 registration notice, so some requirements can still change.

Based on the current private-candidate system, candidates should prepare information such as:

- Correct full name
- Date of birth
- Gender
- Nationality
- State of origin
- Active phone number
- Valid email address
- Residential address
- Passport photograph
- Fingerprint biometric information
- Examination town
- Subjects
- Registration PIN or payment information
- NIN where required by the current registration exercise

The 2026 Second Series required candidates to provide their NIN, so 2027 candidates should ensure their NIN information is available and correct unless WAEC announces otherwise.

## Does WAEC GCE Registration Require Biometrics?

Yes, based on the current registration system.

Private-candidate registration includes fingerprint capture.

This means registration is not simply a matter of purchasing a PIN and filling a form.

The candidate must complete the required biometric process.

The biometric information helps WAEC identify the registered candidate and reduce impersonation.

## Will NIN Be Required for WAEC GCE 2027?

WAEC has not yet published the final 2027 First Series registration instructions.

However, candidates should **expect NIN to remain part of the process**, because NIN was required for the 2026 Second Series registration.

Our recommendation is simple:

Have your NIN ready before registration opens.

Also make sure the personal information associated with your NIN is correct.

Do not use another person’s NIN simply because you have a problem with yours.

## How to Register for WAEC GCE 2027

Registration will be completed through WAEC’s official private-candidate system once the applicable 2027 series opens.

[Open the Official WAEC Private Candidate Registration Portal](https://registration.waecdirect.org/)

The current system provides options including **Start Registration, Continue Registration and Reprint Photocard**.

### Step 1 Confirm That Registration Has Opened

Do not pay anyone simply because they tell you that WAEC GCE 2027 registration has started.

Check:

[Official WAEC Private Candidate Registration Portal](https://registration.waecdirect.org/)

or:

[Official WAEC Nigeria Website](https://www.waecnigeria.org/)

Confirm the examination series before making payment.

### Step 2 Obtain the Registration PIN

Once WAEC opens registration, follow the official instructions for purchasing the registration PIN.

WAEC says prospective private candidates obtain the registration access required to complete the online registration process.

Check the current fee before paying.

Do not rely on an old ₦27,000 advertisement if WAEC has announced a different amount for 2027.

### Step 3 Complete Fingerprint Capture

Complete the required biometric fingerprint registration.

If you do not have the appropriate biometric equipment, use a registration centre familiar with the WAEC private-candidate system.

Make sure the fingerprint captured belongs to you.

### Step 4 Enter Your Personal Information

Enter your details carefully.

This includes information such as:

- Full name
- Date of birth
- Gender
- State
- Nationality
- Contact information

Do not allow a registration operator to guess your date of birth or change the spelling of your name without your approval.

### Step 5 Upload or Capture Your Photograph

Use a clear passport photograph that meets the requirements displayed during registration.

Your photograph is part of your examination identity.

Do not use:

- Somebody else’s photograph
- A group photograph
- A heavily edited selfie
- A blurred image

### Step 6 Enter Your Contact Details

Provide a phone number and email address that you can access.

You may need them for registration information or communication.

Do not use a cyber-cafe operator’s personal email address simply because you do not remember yours.

### Step 7 Choose Your Examination Town

Select an examination town that you can realistically reach during the examination period.

Consider:

- Transport
- Distance
- Accommodation where necessary
- Cost of travelling
- Your expected location during the examination

Do not choose an examination town simply because somebody says the centre there is “easy.”

### Step 8 Select Your Subjects

For 2027, English Language and General Mathematics are currently the two core subjects under WAEC’s entry regulations.

Select another six or seven subjects to bring your total to eight or nine.

Check the admission requirements for your intended course before selecting subjects.

### Step 9 Review Everything

Before submitting, check:

- Name
- Date of birth
- Photograph
- Phone number
- Email
- Examination town
- Examination series
- Subjects

Do not rush this step.

Many registration problems start because candidates allow an operator to click Submit without first showing them the completed form.

### Step 10 Complete the Registration

Submit only after confirming that the details are correct.

Keep your registration information securely.

### Step 11 Print Your Photo Card

WAEC says registered private candidates print an identification photo card containing important information such as the examination centre, centre number and registered subjects.

Keep the document safely.

The current private-candidate portal also provides a **Reprint Photocard** option.

## Where Can You Register for WAEC GCE 2027?

The official registration portal is:

[WAEC Private Candidate Registration Portal](https://registration.waecdirect.org/)

WAEC’s official online service directory also links candidates to this same private-candidate registration system.

You can use an experienced registration centre for biometric assistance where necessary.

However, confirm that the registration is actually being completed on WAEC’s official system.

## Can You Register for WAEC GCE at a Cyber Cafe?

A cyber cafe may assist with registration where it has the required biometric equipment and understands the WAEC process.

However, an ordinary cyber cafe does not automatically become an official WAEC office.

Before allowing anyone to register you:

- Confirm the website being used.
- Ask about the complete cost.
- Check your information yourself.
- Do not allow the operator to submit until you approve the details.
- Collect your registration information and photo card.

The website should ultimately connect to WAEC’s official private-candidate registration system.

## Can You Register for WAEC GCE With Your Phone?

A smartphone can be used for checking registration information and accessing online pages.

However, biometric fingerprint capture is part of the current registration process.

Therefore, a smartphone by itself may not be sufficient to complete every stage.

Most candidates will need access to suitable biometric registration equipment.

## Will WAEC GCE 2027 Be Computer Based?

WAEC has increasingly moved its Private Candidate examinations toward computer-based delivery.

The 2026 First Series was conducted as a computer-based WASSCE for private candidates, while WAEC also announced that the 2026 Second Series would be computer based.

Therefore, candidates preparing for **WAEC GCE 2027 should expect a computer-based examination format unless WAEC announces otherwise**.

The exact format for each paper should be confirmed when WAEC releases the 2027 examination instructions.

Candidates who are not comfortable using a computer should start practising early.

## Can You Register for Both First and Second Series?

The two series are separate examinations.

A candidate may sit the First Series and later register for the Second Series if necessary and permitted under the applicable registration rules.

For example, you might write the First Series but later decide to improve another subject.

Registering for the Second Series does not erase your First Series result.

The examinations remain separate records.

## Can You Register for Only One WAEC GCE Subject?

WAEC’s current entry regulations require candidates to register a minimum of **eight subjects** and maximum of nine.

Therefore, you cannot normally register for only one isolated subject even if your main purpose is to improve just that subject.

Suppose you previously received:

**Chemistry — D7**

and Chemistry is the only grade you want to improve.

You still have to follow WAEC’s minimum subject-entry requirements when registering for the private-candidate examination.

## Can You Combine WAEC GCE With NECO?

Candidates may be able to combine recognised O’Level results where the university and course allow multiple sittings.

The important point is not simply whether both examinations are valid.

The receiving institution determines:

- Whether two sittings are accepted
- Which examination combinations are permitted
- The compulsory subjects
- Minimum grades

Check the admission requirements before deciding how to combine results.

## When Will the WAEC GCE 2027 Timetable Be Released?

WAEC has not yet released the 2027 First or Second Series timetable.

The First Series timetable should become available closer to the examination period.

Based on recent years, we expect the First Series examination around **late January to mid-February 2027**.

The Second Series is currently expected around **September to October 2027**, if WAEC follows its more recent timetable pattern.

Our separate timetable page will be updated once WAEC publishes the official dates.

**READ ALSO:** [WAEC Timetable 2027/2028](/waec-timetable-for-science-art-and-commercial/)

## When Will WAEC GCE First Series 2027 Start?

The final date has not yet been announced.

Based on the 2025 and 2026 First Series timetables, the main examination is expected to begin around **late January 2027** and finish around **mid-February 2027**.

The actual timetable can differ.

Do not book travel or accommodation based solely on the estimate.

Wait for WAEC’s official timetable before making arrangements that cannot easily be changed.

## When Will WAEC GCE Second Series 2027 Start?

WAEC has not yet announced the Second Series 2027 examination dates.

The 2026 Second Series was scheduled for the September–October period.

If WAEC maintains that more recent schedule, candidates should expect the 2027 Second Series examination around:

**September to October 2027**

Again, this is an estimate rather than an official timetable.

## How to Prepare for WAEC GCE 2027

Do not wait until the timetable is released before beginning preparation.

Start with the syllabus for every subject you plan to write.

Our [WAEC Syllabus 2027/2028 for All Subjects](/waec-syllabus-for-all-subjects-pdf-download/) contains the individual subject syllabus guides.

You can then use our [WAEC Areas of Concentration 2027/2028](/waec-areas-of-concentration-for-all-subjects/) to identify major syllabus areas that deserve attention during revision.

A good preparation order is:

**Syllabus → Textbooks → Areas of Concentration → Past Questions → Practice → Revision**

Because private-candidate examinations are moving toward computer-based delivery, also practise answering questions on a computer.

## Common WAEC GCE Registration Mistakes to Avoid

Registration errors can become difficult to correct later.

Avoid:

- Entering the wrong name
- Entering the wrong date of birth
- Using somebody else’s NIN
- Selecting the wrong examination series
- Choosing the wrong subjects
- Selecting an unsuitable examination town
- Using somebody else’s photograph
- Giving an inaccessible email address
- Using the wrong phone number
- Allowing somebody to submit without your approval
- Paying before confirming registration has opened
- Paying a fake agent
- Using an unofficial registration website
- Assuming an expected date is already official
- Waiting for a possible deadline extension

Take your time and review the completed form.

## Conclusion

WAEC GCE registration for 2027 has **not yet officially opened**, and WAEC has not announced the final registration dates, deadlines or fees for either the First Series or Second Series.

However, recent examination cycles provide a useful planning guide.

The **2027 First Series registration is expected to begin around December 2026 and continue into January 2027**, with the examination likely to take place around **late January to mid-February 2027**.

The **2027 Second Series registration is expected to begin around May or June 2027**, with registration likely continuing through July or August and the examination expected around **September to October 2027**.

The official 2027 registration fee is also not yet known.

The 2025 First Series cost ₦27,000, and the 2026 First Series remained around that level, but the 2026 Second Series increased to **₦37,000**.

For that reason, a candidate preparing for 2027 should currently budget:

**Around ₦37,000 plus applicable service charges**

and preferably keep a little more available in case WAEC increases the fee.

For 2027, candidates are currently expected to register between **eight and nine subjects**, with English Language and General Mathematics as the two core subjects available for the examination.
