“What is the minimum JAMB score required to gain admission into a state university?”

In this article, you’ll find the correct minimum JAMB score for state universities in 2027, how schools use it, and what to do if your score is low.
Official JAMB Cut-Off Mark for State Universities in 2027
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially set 140 as the minimum cut-off mark for state universities in 2027.
This means you must score at least 140 in your UTME to be eligible to apply to any state university in Nigeria. Candidates who score below 140 will not be considered for admission into any state university, even if they meet other requirements.

State Universities Set Their Own Higher Cut-Off Marks
While JAMB’s minimum is 140, each state university is allowed to set its own higher cut-off marks based on how competitive the course is and how many students applied. For example:
- Lagos State University (LASU) – 180 and above
- Delta State University (DELSU) – 150 to 180
- Ebonyi State University (EBSU) – 140+
- Osun State University (UNIOSUN) – 160+
- Abia State University (ABSU) – 140+
- Ekiti State University (EKSU) – 150+
For competitive courses like Law, Medicine, Nursing, Engineering, and Mass Communication, the cut-off can be as high as 200 or more, even in state universities.

What If You Score Between 140 and 159?
If you score between 140 and 159, you may still gain admission, but likely into:
- Less competitive courses (e.g., Education, Sociology, Religious Studies, Agricultural Science)
- Less competitive state universities
- Courses with open slots after merit lists are released
Make sure to check if your subject combination and O’level results match the course requirements.
Other Admission Requirements Besides JAMB Score
State universities usually don’t rely on JAMB UTME scores alone. Other things they consider include:
- Your O’level results (WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB)
- Post-UTME screening or internal tests (if the school conducts one)
- Whether you made the school your first choice
- Your state of origin or catchment area
- The number of available slots for the course
So, scoring 140 and meeting other requirements puts you in a better position — but doesn’t guarantee admission, especially for competitive courses.
What to Do If Your Score Is Below 140
If your UTME score is below 140, you won’t be able to apply to a state university. Here are your options:
- Apply to polytechnics or colleges of education, which accept 100 and above
- Consider JUPEB, IJMB, or Pre-degree programs
- Prepare to write JAMB again in 2027 with better preparation
