# What is the Meaning of INDEBTED in WAEC Result?

INDEBTED in WAEC result means the candidate’s school or sponsoring government has an outstanding financial obligation to WAEC. See why it appears and when the result can be released.

If you checked your WAEC result and saw **INDEBTED** instead of grades such as A1, B3, C6 or F9, it generally means that **the school, state government or other body responsible for sponsoring your examination has an outstanding financial obligation to WAEC, so the affected result has not been made available**.

[![What is the Meaning of INDEBTED in WAEC Result?](https://examloaded.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/What-is-the-Meaning-of-INDEBTED-in-WAEC-Result-300x178.webp)](https://examloaded.com/what-is-the-meaning-of-indebted-in-waec-result/what-is-the-meaning-of-indebted-in-waec-result/)What is the Meaning of INDEBTED in WAEC Result?
The correct spelling is **INDEBTED**, not “indepted.”

Most importantly, seeing INDEBTED does **not mean you failed WAEC**.

It also does **not automatically mean you committed examination malpractice**.

During the release of the 2026 WASSCE results in Nigeria, WAEC’s Head of National Office stated that candidates sponsored by states indebted to the Council would not have their results released until the outstanding payments were made.

**ALSO READ:** [WAEC Specimens 2027](/waec-specimens-practicals/)

A similar situation occurred in previous examination years. In one 2023 case where candidates’ online results displayed **INDEBTED**, WAEC’s Head of Communication told PUNCH that the affected school owed WAEC.

Therefore, if your result shows:

**English Language — INDEBTED**
**Mathematics — INDEBTED**
**Biology — INDEBTED**

the word is not telling you the grades you scored.

Your actual grades are simply not currently accessible because of the financial issue attached to the school or sponsorship arrangement.

## What Does INDEBTED Mean in WAEC Result?

INDEBTED means that there is an **outstanding financial obligation connected with the candidate’s examination entry**, and WAEC has not made the result available until the matter is resolved.

For many school candidates in Nigeria, this can happen when:

- A state government sponsored candidates for WASSCE but has not completed payment to WAEC.
- A school has an outstanding financial obligation to WAEC.
- Another payment-related issue involving the examination centre or sponsorship arrangement remains unresolved.

In August 2026, WAEC publicly stated that the results of candidates sponsored by states indebted to the Council would **not be released until payment was made**.

That is the clearest way to understand the status:

**INDEBTED = Result blocked because an outstanding financial obligation connected with the candidate’s school or sponsor has not been settled.**

## Does INDEBTED Mean I Personally Owe WAEC Money?

Not necessarily.

This is a very important distinction.

A candidate may see INDEBTED even though:

- The candidate personally paid the school.
- The candidate attended a public school where the state sponsored the examination.
- Parents were told that examination fees had been covered.
- The candidate personally has no outstanding payment.

For example, WAEC said during the 2026 results release that candidates sponsored by **indebted state governments** would be unable to access their results until the governments settled the outstanding amounts.

So when you see INDEBTED, do not immediately conclude:

**“I personally owe WAEC.”**

The debt may belong to the sponsoring government or school.

Your first task is to find out **who is responsible for the payment attached to your examination entry**.

## Does INDEBTED Mean My School Owes WAEC?

It can.

There is documented evidence of this happening.

In a 2023 case involving students whose WASSCE results showed INDEBTED, WAEC’s Head of Communication responded that **the school owed WAEC**.

Therefore, INDEBTED may relate to the school rather than the individual candidate.

If you attended a private or public school and see this status, contact your:

- Principal
- Examination Officer
- School Administrator
- WAEC Coordinator

and ask whether the school has any unresolved payment issue with WAEC.

## Does INDEBTED Mean My State Government Owes WAEC?

It can, especially for candidates whose WASSCE fees were sponsored by a state government.

WAEC has repeatedly withheld access to the results of candidates sponsored by governments that had not settled outstanding obligations.

For 2026, WAEC publicly said candidates sponsored by indebted states would not have their results released until payment was made.

The same general situation was reported in 2025, when WAEC said some government-sponsored candidates would not receive their results until the affected governments paid their outstanding registration fees.

So if you attended a government school and the state paid or was supposed to pay your WASSCE fees, the status may be connected with your state government’s obligation rather than anything you personally did.

## Is INDEBTED a WAEC Grade?

No.

INDEBTED is not part of the normal WAEC grading system.

Normal WAEC grades include:

- A1
- B2
- B3
- C4
- C5
- C6
- D7
- E8
- F9

INDEBTED is a **result-access or result-status issue**, not an academic grade.

For example:

**Economics — B3**

means the candidate received B3.

But:

**Economics — INDEBTED**

does not show the candidate’s performance.

The actual Economics grade is not currently available to the candidate.

For a complete explanation of WAEC grades, see our [WAEC Grading System](/waec-grading-system-and-meaning-of-all-grades/) guide.

## Does INDEBTED Mean I Failed WAEC?

No.

INDEBTED does not mean F9.

You may have:

- Passed the subject.
- Obtained a credit.
- Obtained A1.
- Obtained B3.
- Obtained C6.
- Obtained D7.
- Obtained E8.
- Obtained F9.

The word INDEBTED itself does not reveal your grade.

It simply prevents you from seeing the actual released academic result while the payment issue remains unresolved.

## Does INDEBTED Mean Examination Malpractice?

Not automatically.

INDEBTED is fundamentally associated with an **outstanding financial obligation**.

This is different from results withheld because of suspected examination malpractice.

For example, during WAEC’s 2026 result announcement, the Council separately discussed:

- Candidates whose results were withheld over examination-malpractice issues; and
- Candidates sponsored by indebted states whose results would not be released until payment was made.

That distinction is very important.

Do not see INDEBTED and automatically assume:

**“WAEC says I cheated.”**

The status may have nothing to do with your performance or conduct during the examination.

## Can a School Be Indebted Because of a WAEC Surcharge?

Yes, a school-related financial obligation may sometimes arise from more than ordinary registration fees.

A 2023 PUNCH report documented a case where candidates’ results displayed INDEBTED. WAEC’s Head of Communication confirmed that the school owed the Council. The report also quoted a Lagos education official explaining that certain schools could have financial obligations arising from WAEC sanctions or surcharges.

This means you should not automatically assume the debt is simply:

**“The school forgot to pay my registration fee.”**

The exact financial issue may differ from one school or state to another.

Only the school, sponsoring authority or WAEC can confirm the specific reason.

## Is INDEBTED the Same as WITHHELD?

Not exactly.

Both situations can result in a candidate being unable to access a normal grade, but the reasons can be very different.

### INDEBTED

The issue is connected with an outstanding financial obligation involving the school, sponsoring government or other responsible body.

### WITHHELD

A result may be withheld while WAEC considers an examination issue, including suspected examination malpractice.

WAEC has an official complaint/defence process specifically for candidates whose results are **WITHHELD/HELD**.

Therefore:

**INDEBTED = Financial/payment issue**

**WITHHELD = Result held pending an examination-related issue or review**

Read:

[What is the Meaning of WITHHELD in WAEC Result?](/what-is-the-meaning-of-withheld-in-waec-result/)

## Is INDEBTED the Same as HELD?

No.

HELD generally means the result has not been released because an examination-related issue remains unresolved.

INDEBTED points to an **outstanding financial obligation**.

For example:

**HELD — investigation/review issue**

while:

**INDEBTED — payment/debt issue**

Read our detailed guide:

[What is the Meaning of HELD in WAEC Result?](/what-is-the-meaning-of-held-in-waec-result/)

## Is INDEBTED the Same as OUTSTANDING?

No.

They should not be treated as the same status.

### OUTSTANDING

The affected subject result is still pending, commonly because of an unresolved processing or examination-record issue.

### INDEBTED

The result is inaccessible because there is an outstanding financial obligation connected with the school, government sponsor or other responsible body.

Read:

[What is the Meaning of OUTSTANDING in WAEC Result?](/what-is-the-meaning-of-outstanding-in-waec-result/)

## Is INDEBTED the Same as CANCELLED?

No.

They are very different.

### CANCELLED

WAEC has invalidated the affected result following its decision.

### INDEBTED

The result has not been made accessible because of a financial obligation.

An indebted result is therefore not automatically a cancelled result.

Once the payment issue is properly resolved, WAEC has stated that affected candidates can access their results.

Read:

[What is the Meaning of CANCELLED in WAEC Result?](/what-is-the-meaning-of-cancelled-in-waec-result/)

## Is INDEBTED the Same as ABS?

No.

ABS means:

**Absent**

INDEBTED means there is an unresolved financial obligation connected with the examination entry or sponsor.

A candidate whose result shows INDEBTED may have written every examination paper normally.

Read:

[What is the Meaning of ABS in WAEC Result?](/what-is-the-meaning-of-abs-in-waec-result/)

## Is INDEBTED the Same as F9?

No.

F9 is a failing academic grade.

INDEBTED is not a grade.

For example:

**Mathematics — F9**

means the candidate received an F9.

But:

**Mathematics — INDEBTED**

means you cannot currently see the actual Mathematics grade because of the financial issue.

## INDEBTED vs OUTSTANDING vs HELD vs WITHHELD vs CANCELLED

Here is an easier comparison:

| WAEC Status | General Meaning |
| ----------- | --------------- |
| A1–E8 | Normal released grade |
| F9 | Failing grade |
| ABS | Candidate recorded absent |
| OUTSTANDING | Subject result still pending/being processed |
| HELD | Result not released pending an issue |
| WITHHELD | Result withheld pending resolution/review |
| INDEBTED | Result inaccessible because of an outstanding financial obligation |
| CANCELLED | Result invalidated following WAEC’s decision |

The important thing is to identify the **exact word displayed on your own result**.

Do not assume all unavailable results have the same cause.

## Why Does INDEBTED Sometimes Appear in All My Subjects?

This is common where the issue affects the candidate’s **entire examination entry**, rather than one particular paper.

For example, a result may appear as:

- English Language — INDEBTED
- Mathematics — INDEBTED
- Biology — INDEBTED
- Chemistry — INDEBTED
- Physics — INDEBTED
- Economics — INDEBTED

This does not mean that you owe a separate amount for each subject.

It can mean the entire result has been blocked because of the payment issue attached to the school or sponsor.

Historical examples of WAEC result sheets have shown candidates with INDEBTED displayed across their subjects when their sponsoring authority had outstanding obligations.

## Does INDEBTED Mean My Results Have Already Been Marked?

You should not assume the exact internal processing stage simply from the word INDEBTED.

However, in cases where WAEC announces that candidates cannot **access** their results until outstanding payments are settled, the problem is clearly the financial restriction on release or access rather than an ordinary academic grade.

The safest statement is:

**Your actual grades are not currently available to you because of the financial issue.**

Do not guess your scores until WAEC makes the result accessible.

## Can an INDEBTED WAEC Result Be Released?

Yes.

This is one of the biggest differences between INDEBTED and CANCELLED.

WAEC has stated that the results of candidates sponsored by indebted states would not be released **until payment is made** and has appealed to the relevant authorities to settle their obligations so candidates can access their results.

Therefore, once the financial issue is resolved, the affected candidates can potentially gain access to their results.

## Will My Result Come Out Immediately After the Debt Is Paid?

Do not assume that it will appear instantly.

Even after payment has been made, WAEC may need to:

- Confirm the payment.
- Update the relevant records.
- Remove restrictions.
- Complete administrative processing.

So there may be some time between settlement of the debt and when candidates can finally access the result.

The school or sponsoring authority should follow up with WAEC after making the required payment.

## How Long Does INDEBTED Take to Clear?

There is no single fixed number of days that applies to every case.

It depends largely on:

- When the responsible body makes payment.
- When WAEC confirms the payment.
- Administrative processing.
- The number of candidates affected.
- Whether additional issues need to be resolved.

If the state government or school has not paid, there may be nothing the candidate can personally do to force immediate release.

Continue following up through the appropriate authority.

## What Should I Do If My WAEC Result Shows INDEBTED?

If your result displays INDEBTED, follow these steps:

- Confirm your examination number.
- Confirm your examination year and examination type.
- Take note of the exact status displayed.
- Contact your school principal or examination officer.
- Ask whether the school has an outstanding obligation to WAEC.
- If you were government-sponsored, ask whether the state has settled the examination fees.
- Follow official information from your school, state education authority or WAEC.
- Continue checking the result after the issue is resolved.
- Do not pay random people who claim they can “clear indebted.”
- Do not assume you failed.

## What Should a Public School Candidate Do?

If you attended a public school and the government sponsored your WASSCE fees, start with your school.

Speak with:

- Principal
- Examination Officer
- School Administrator
- Ministry of Education representative where necessary

Ask whether the school has received information concerning WAEC payment.

If the debt belongs to the sponsoring government, an individual candidate normally cannot settle an entire state’s financial obligation personally.

The responsible authority needs to resolve the issue with WAEC.

## What Should a Private School Candidate Do?

Contact your principal or school management.

Ask whether:

- Your examination registration fee was fully remitted.
- The school has another outstanding payment to WAEC.
- WAEC has given the school any instructions.
- Other candidates from the same school are affected.

If many students from your school see INDEBTED, that strongly suggests the issue may be at the school or centre level rather than being unique to one candidate.

## Can My Parents Pay WAEC Directly to Clear INDEBTED?

Do not make an unofficial payment simply because somebody says it will clear the result.

The exact debtor may be:

- Your school.
- Your state government.
- Another sponsoring authority.

The payment may also relate to a larger amount covering several candidates.

First determine the actual obligation through your school and WAEC’s official channels.

If an official payment is required from you individually, follow only the procedure provided by WAEC or your authorized school.

## What If I Already Paid My School?

Keep your proof of payment.

If you personally paid your examination fee to the school but your result still displays INDEBTED, contact the school’s management immediately.

Your receipt may help establish that you fulfilled your obligation to the school.

But even where an individual candidate paid the school, the result may remain inaccessible if the **school itself has not settled its obligation to WAEC**.

## Can INDEBTED Be Caused by My State Government?

Yes.

This has happened repeatedly with government-sponsored candidates.

WAEC’s 2026 announcement specifically stated that candidates sponsored by states indebted to the Council would not have their results released until payment was made.

So candidates should not automatically blame their schools without checking whether the state sponsorship arrangement is responsible.

## Can the Whole School Show INDEBTED?

Yes.

If the financial issue belongs to the school or sponsor, many candidates may be affected together.

A documented 2023 case involved more than 200 students from one Lagos school whose results reportedly displayed INDEBTED. WAEC’s communication head said the school owed the Council.

If many classmates have the same problem, contact the school collectively through the appropriate administrative channel.

## Can an Entire State’s Candidates Be Affected?

Candidates sponsored by a state can be affected if the state has not settled its financial obligation to WAEC.

WAEC’s 2026 statement confirmed that results of candidates sponsored by indebted states would not be released until payment was made.

This means a payment problem can potentially affect a very large number of candidates.

## Will WAEC Name the Indebted States?

Not necessarily.

For example, during the 2026 result release, WAEC did not publicly name the states affected in the announcement reported by the media.

Therefore, if your result displays INDEBTED, do not depend solely on social-media lists claiming to name affected states.

Confirm through your school or relevant education authority.

## Is INDEBTED Permanent?

Not necessarily.

Unlike a cancelled result, indebtedness is based on an unresolved payment obligation.

When the relevant financial obligation is settled and WAEC completes any necessary administrative process, affected candidates may be able to access their results.

Historical cases also show that WAEC has subsequently released previously blocked results after payment arrangements were resolved.

## Can INDEBTED Change to A1?

The word INDEBTED itself does not tell you your grade.

After the financial restriction is removed, your actual result may show:

- A1
- B2
- B3
- C4
- C5
- C6
- D7
- E8
- F9

depending on your actual examination performance.

If you genuinely earned A1, your released result may show A1.

But INDEBTED does not guarantee any particular grade.

## Can INDEBTED Change to F9?

Yes, if F9 is your actual assessed grade.

Again, INDEBTED does not mean you passed or failed.

It only hides or blocks access to the actual academic result while the payment problem remains.

## Can INDEBTED Change to CANCELLED?

INDEBTED itself is a financial status.

It should not automatically turn into CANCELLED simply because a debt exists.

However, if there is a separate examination issue involving the candidate, that separate matter would be handled according to WAEC’s rules.

Do not mix up unrelated statuses.

## Can I Use INDEBTED for University Admission?

No.

INDEBTED is not a grade.

A university needs to see the actual grades required for your course.

For example:

- English Language — INDEBTED
- Mathematics — INDEBTED
- Biology — INDEBTED
- Chemistry — INDEBTED
- Physics — INDEBTED

An admission officer cannot determine whether you have the required five credits from this result because your grades are unavailable.

You need the actual result to be released.

## What If I Already Got Admission Before My Result Changed to INDEBTED?

Contact your institution immediately if the issue is affecting verification of your O’level result.

There have been documented cases of candidates encountering admission difficulties because institutions could not verify results that displayed INDEBTED.

Also inform your school so the financial issue can be followed up urgently.

Do not submit a manipulated or fake result to your institution.

## Can I Upload an INDEBTED Result to JAMB CAPS?

You should use actual released O’level grades when institutions or JAMB require your result.

INDEBTED does not provide the grades necessary for O’level verification.

If your result is currently blocked, follow up until the legitimate grades become available.

Do not guess what your grades are.

## Can I Use Another WAEC or NECO Result Instead?

If you already have another valid O’level result satisfying your admission requirements, you may be able to use it depending on:

- Your institution.
- Your course.
- Number-of-sittings rules.
- Accepted examination combinations.

The fact that one result is currently INDEBTED does not automatically invalidate another completely separate valid result.

## Should I Rewrite WAEC Because My Result Says INDEBTED?

Do not rush to register for another examination simply because of INDEBTED.

The problem is not necessarily your academic performance.

If the responsible authority settles the debt, your actual result may become available.

However, if an admission deadline is approaching and there is uncertainty about when the issue will be resolved, you may need to consider your available alternatives.

First follow up with the school and sponsoring authority.

## Can Someone Clear INDEBTED for Me?

Be careful.

Do not pay anyone on:

- WhatsApp
- Telegram
- Facebook
- Instagram
- TikTok
- Other unofficial platforms

who says:

**“I can clear WAEC indebted.”**

or:

**“Send me money and your grades will appear tonight.”**

The financial obligation has to be resolved through the legitimate WAEC process.

A stranger cannot legitimately remove a state government’s or school’s debt from WAEC’s records.

## Can Someone Upgrade an INDEBTED Result?

No legitimate result process involves secretly upgrading your grades.

Once your result is released, you should receive the grades you legitimately earned.

Anyone promising:

**INDEBTED → A1**

or:

**INDEBTED → B2**

for money should not be trusted.

## Should I Buy Another WAEC Result Checker PIN?

Not simply because the result says INDEBTED.

Buying another PIN does not settle the underlying debt.

If the result-access restriction is caused by a financial obligation attached to your school or sponsor, using another result-checking PIN will not fix that problem.

Wait until you have reason to believe the issue has been resolved before unnecessarily consuming additional result-checking attempts.

For result-checking instructions, see:

[WAEC Result Checker 2027](/how-to-check-waec-result/)

## How Will I Know When INDEBTED Has Been Cleared?

Check the result again after your school or sponsoring authority confirms that the payment issue has been resolved.

Instead of seeing:

**English Language — INDEBTED**

you should eventually be able to see your actual grade, such as:

**English Language — B3**

if B3 is the legitimate grade awarded.

The same applies to the other subjects.

## What to Do Immediately After Seeing INDEBTED

Use this checklist:

- Do not assume you failed.
- Do not assume you committed malpractice.
- Confirm that you checked the correct result.
- Contact your school.
- Ask whether your examination was government-sponsored.
- Ask whether any WAEC payment remains outstanding.
- Keep any proof that you paid your school.
- Follow updates from the school or responsible authority.
- Avoid unofficial agents.
- Recheck your result after the financial issue has been resolved.

## Conclusion

If your [WAEC](https://www.waecnigeria.org/) result shows **INDEBTED**, it does **not mean that you failed your examination**.

It generally means that your result is currently inaccessible because **the school, state government or other body responsible for the examination payment has an outstanding financial obligation to WAEC**.

WAEC confirmed this principle again during the release of the 2026 WASSCE results, stating that candidates sponsored by states indebted to the Council would not have their results released until the required payments were made.

A school itself can also be responsible. In a documented case where candidates’ results displayed INDEBTED, WAEC’s Head of Communication confirmed that the affected school owed WAEC.

Therefore:

**INDEBTED does not mean F9.**

**INDEBTED does not automatically mean examination malpractice.**

**INDEBTED does not mean your result has been permanently cancelled.**

It means there is a payment-related issue preventing access to your grades.

If you are affected, contact your school first and find out who was responsible for paying your examination fees.

If a state government sponsored you, the issue may need to be resolved by the government.

If your school is responsible, the school must follow up with WAEC.

Once the legitimate financial issue has been settled and WAEC completes the necessary processing, you may then be able to access the grades you actually earned.

Do not pay strangers who claim they can secretly “clear” INDEBTED or upgrade your grades.
